Reasonable Suspicion Testing

Reasonable suspicion drug testing is performed when evidence or observed signs of impairment in an employee. Under DOT regulations a reasonable suspicion test maybe administered when a Trained Supervisor has observed specific, contemporaneous, articulable appearance, speech, body odor or behavior indicates illicit drug or alcohol use. A supervisor is required to have two hours of training on the aforementioned. REASONABLE SUSPICION IS NOT RANDOM DRUG TESTING!

A TRAINED SUPERVISOR HAS TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A REASONABLE SUSPICION DETERMINATION BY WHAT HE (THE SUPERVISOR) HAS SEEN, HEARD, SMELLED AND DOCUMENTED.

Reasonable suspicion can be done prior to performing safety sensitive work
While performing safety sensitive work
Immediately after performing safety sensitive work if there are reasonable suspicion based on contemporaneous, articulable observations concerning the appearance, behavior, speech or body odors of the employee.
