Dot Breath Alcohol Testing

Alcohol Breathalyzer Test

Alcohol testing is not performed for pre-employment. However, some, but very few companies do test for pre-employment purposes. Breathalyzer test can be performed for random, return to duty, follow up, reasonable suspicion and post accident needs using EBT (Evidential Breath Testing). Alcohol Testing can also be performed with saliva devices.

If the alcohol levels are 0.02 or greater, a second confirmation test must be conducted with an approved EBT device.

An employee needs to be removed from their Safety Sensitive position if levels are:

  • 0.02 or greater -Removal for 24 hours.
  • 0.04 or greater – Positive result, removal from workplace.

 Breathalyzer

Overview

A breathalyzer test is a non-invasive method used to estimate blood alcohol content (BAC) by measuring the amount of alcohol in exhaled breath. The test involves blowing into a mouthpiece and the device translates the alcohol concentration in your breath to an estimated BAC displayed on screen. While reliable, breathalyzer readings can be affected by factors like mouthwash or medical conditions.

There are two types of breathalyzer tests: preliminary (PBT) and evidentiary (EBT). The PBT is used by law enforcement for quick estimates, while the EBT, calibrated to a higher accuracy standard, is used in legal proceedings.

A BAC of 0.08% or higher is considered legally intoxicated in most jurisdictions, and exceeding this limit can lead to fines, license suspension, or even criminal charges.

Remember, breathalyzer readings are not a definitive measure of impairment, and other factors like fatigue or medication can influence how alcohol affects you. It’s important to follow the instructions provided by the test administrator and consult a healthcare professional or legal expert if you have concerns.
